Serpentine Jade

General Information: Serpentine Jade is a trade name for serpentinite (metamorphic rock composed largely of serpentine group minerals) sold as a jade substitute or alternative. While not mineralogically true jade (nephrite or jadeite), it shares a similar appearance — smooth, green, and waxy — and has long been used in carvings and jewelry. It is sometimes called New Jade or Korean Jade commercially.

Metaphysical Properties: Serpentine Jade is associated with the activation of the kundalini energy — the primordial life force coiled at the base of the spine — and with the clearing of energetic pathways for its rise through the chakra system. It is believed to be an excellent meditation stone for those exploring Kundalini yoga or tantric practice. Serpentine is also strongly associated with wisdom, longevity, and an ancient, earth-based healing intelligence. Practitioners use it to facilitate deep healing at the cellular and energetic levels, to connect with nature spirits and the wisdom of the land, and to develop a compassionate, wise relationship with oneself and the natural world.

Identification Tips: Green (various shades), yellow-green, or mottled; greasy to waxy luster; opaque; smooth feel; hardness 2.5–4 (softer than true jade); lighter in weight than nephrite jade of similar size. Serpentine scratches more easily than true jade.
