About This Crystal

General Information: Rainbow Obsidian is a black volcanic glass that displays iridescent rainbow bands of color (green, blue, gold, purple) when light strikes it at the correct angle. The rainbow sheen is produced by the refraction of light through nanoscale layers of magnetite or other inclusions aligned within the glass.

Origin Locations: Mexico (primary source), United States, and Japan.

Related Chakras: Root, All Chakras (via rainbow spectrum)

Metaphysical Properties: Rainbow Obsidian is considered a gentler variation of black obsidian that uses the full spectrum of light to work with the shadow self, bringing in healing, hope, and beauty even as it reveals and clears difficult energies. It is associated with bringing light into the darkness, finding beauty in one's own depths, and transforming pain into wisdom with greater grace than straight black obsidian. Practitioners use it for deep emotional healing, cord-cutting (releasing energy ties to past relationships or situations), and for transitioning from grief toward hope and renewal. It is a particularly powerful stone for healing heartbreak and rediscovering one's own light after loss.

Identification Tips: Black volcanic glass that reveals rainbow sheen (green, blue, gold, purple) when held to a light source at the correct angle; conchoidal fracture; glassy luster; hardness 5–5.5. The rainbow is visible only in specific lighting conditions.

Popular Uses: Emotional healing, heartbreak recovery, shadow work, cord cutting, grief-to-hope transition, meditation, jewelry.
